According to the Urban Institute, the number of Americans 65 and older will more than double to reach 80 million by 2040. At the same time, the number of adults 85 and older—those most likely to need personal assistance—will nearly quadruple.
As our population ages, the desire to maintain independence and dignity, especially in one’s own home, becomes increasingly paramount, spurring the demand for AgeTech devices that can help older adults to “age in place” comfortably and safely. Such devices not only address practical concerns such as medication management and home security but also promote overall well-being and social connectedness.
This year’s CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics show which took place in January, showcased numerous AgeTech products that can make a difference in the lives of aging adults by empowering them to maintain their autonomy in myriad ways.
One such example of the AgeTech solutions highlighted at CES is the Nobi Ceiling AI-powered Smart Lamp, a ceiling-mounted version of Nobi’s award-winning AI-powered Smart Lamps. The Smart Lamps detect and prevent falls and monitor health and activity patterns, significantly improving the safety and well-being of older adults.
According to Niels Coch, head of Nobi USA, “There was an overwhelming interest in Nobi’s AI-powered Smart Lamps during CES this year, and the awards that our new Nobi Ceiling product garnered during the show only reinforce the critical need to change how we detect and prevent falls, not only in senior-living communities but also in home environments where more and more older adults are choosing to age.”
Another event that will showcase innovative AgeTech design is the upcoming On Tech @ On Aging 2024, a four-day summit within the annual On Aging conference to be held March 25-28 in San Francisco. Featuring headline events such as the AgeTech Challenge Innovation Showcase, workshops, and a robust exhibit space, On Tech @ On Aging is produced by the American Society on Aging in partnership with AgeTech Atlanta.
One thing is clear: Gone are the days when aging meant relinquishing control and relying solely on external assistance. Increasingly, older adults are embracing AgeTech devices as empowering tools that allow them to maintain their autonomy and lead fulfilling lives on their own terms.
As the demand for these technologies continues to rise, so does the potential for a future where aging is no longer synonymous with limitations.
